Overview
Nielsen Claritas Income Producing Assets (IPA) is a proprietary model that estimates liquid assets, based on responses to its Market Audit survey of financial behaviors, for which Nielsen Claritas has actual dollar measures from each survey respondent.
IPA measures liquid wealth and other asset classes that are relatively easy to redeem and move, including

- Savings accounts
- Money market accounts
- CDs
- Stocks

- Retirement accounts
Features & Benefits
The IPA model classifies all households in the U.S. into one of 10 ranges, from less than $25,000 to over $2 million:
- $2,000,000 or more
- $1,000,000 – $1,999,999
- $750,000 – $999,999
- $500,000 – $749,999
- $250,000 – $499,999
- $100,000 – $249,999
- $75,000 – $99,999
- $50,000 – $74,999
- $25,000 – $49,999
- Less than $25,000
The Income Producing Asset ranges are available four different ways:
- Household coding:
An IPA code or score can be appended for each client or prospect household record through Nielsen Claritas Production Services or through a Nielsen Claritas Link Partner, including all the major service bureaus. Clients can then use these household level scores to profile their customer bases and identify their best customers, using the most precise measure of affluence available.
- List Select:
With a clear understanding of their target customers, clients can purchase prospect lists by IPA score through Nielsen Claritas or one of its Link Partners, for direct mail or other marketing campaigns, to increase the ROI.
- Directory Assignments:
If clients prefer, they can purchase directories at one of 4 different postal or census geographies: (i) Delivery Point Codes (DPC), also referred to by Claritas as Zip+6; (ii) Zip+4; (iii) Zip Code; or (iv) Block Group level. Clients can then have their own IT staff apply the IPA code associated with each geography to each customer/prospect record, to allow for precision marketing.
- Distributions:
IPA distributions or ground counts are available for numerous census and postal geographies through a number of Claritas software platforms or as a flat file for specific geographies. These distributions provide marketers the IPA composition of their markets or trade areas, and can be used to develop marketing strategies by allocating limited marketing dollars based on market potential.
Technical Specifications
IPA estimates liquid assets based on respondents to the Nielsen Claritas Market Audit survey of financial behaviors–liquid assets for which Claritas has actual dollar measures from each survey respondent. From the survey base, information for nearly 250,000 households (rolling three years of quarterly surveys) is used to construct balance information for the variety of financial products and services that are core to IPA.
